The Tay ethnic people in Ha Thanh village
From Ha Giang city about 7km to the west, Ha Thanh is a community based ecotourism village of The Tay ethnic people, next to it is a poetic Tien stream. Besides Ha Thanh, there is also a Tay’s village, it’s Tha village.
The habits and customs of the Tay ethnic people
In their customs, the Tay ethnic people gathers from 10 – 20 households to be the villages. They often live close the streams which along the valleys at the foot of the mountain.
Like the house of the Thai people, their traditional house is a stilt house with a palm-leaf roof. The palm-leaf roof has a thickness from 20 – 40 cm and durability from 5 to 10 years, and when it has sign of damage, they will add overlap by more layer of the palm leaves or they can replace it by new ones.
The special thing about the stilt house of the Tay people in this area that they still kept the palm leaf roof. In the other villages, they used the roof made of metal or cement because of durability.
The stilt house is the traditional house of many ethnic groups with the floor high about 2m from the land. It can help to avoid the wild animals, the flood. It also use to breed cattle and poultry, to keep the farming tools and the food like rice, corn,…
Economic features of the Tay ethnic people
About economic features, most the Tay people are farmer. Their traditional agricultural are wet rice cultivation, fruit trees, breeding cattle and poultry and traditional handicraft. Besides, most households have the pond and they are famous for raising Bong fish.
