Places to go in Ha Giang (part 2) – The Dong Van karst plateau
Besides the colorful terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang is especially famous with the Dong Van karst plateau UNESCO Global Geopark. In that place, there are many unique architecture works and majestic natural landscapes. The Dong Van karst plateau UNESCO Global Geopark
Located in the northernmost part of Vietnam. It’s covering an area of 2.345km2 of the entire four northern districts of Ha Giang province.That is Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac. The Dong Van karst plateau has been recognized as the first Global Geopark of Vietnam since 2010.
With limestone covering more than 60% of the surface area at the average altitude of the more than 1.000m above sea level, the Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark is famous with the deep canyons,steep cliffs and sharp summits, rugged stone forests and stone deserts, …Here one can discover and understand the fascinating story of the last more than 500 million years of Earth’s history.
Known as a “thirsty land”, Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark is home of 17 ethnic minority groups, such as Mong, Dao, Tay, Nung, Lo Lo,…. All of them are famous with traditional cultures imbued with enriched identity. The Geopark is also a world of biodiversity. There are many plant and animal species endemic for a tropical to subtropical and temperate karst area.
Quan Ba heaven gate
Quan Ba heaven gate is located in Quan Ba commune, about 43km north of Ha Giang city. Located at an altitude of 1.500m above sea level, this is the highest point on the road from Ha Giang city to Quan Ba town. Here, in 1939, the French set up a massive gate made from 15cm thick iron-wood to bar the only road to the Dong Van plateau. One time, behind this gate was another “world” – the “autonomous region of the Mong people”. It’s including Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac districts, completely isolated from the outside world. At present, there is no sign of that wooden gate anymore.
If Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark is a “rocky kingdom”, the Quan Ba heaven gate is the gate that lead visitors to this paradise. Standing on the Heaven gate, visitors can view the vast Tam Son valley and the legend road – “Happy road”.
Located in Tam Sown town, Fairy Bosom is a unique landscape that consisis of two smooth karst cones. It’s shaped like the bosom of young woman emerging from the colourful mixture of paddy fields and house roofs. The name dates back from ancient times and there is a legend about these mountains.
Nam Dam cultural village
In Quan Ba commune, Nam Dam village is about 2km from Tam Son town. It is inhabited by Dao ethnic people. The villagers still retain their traditional cultural identity, such as: residential architecture, beliefs, habits and customs, traditional festivals, traditional costume,…
Come to Nam Dam culture village, visitors will have the opportunity to explore their culture when staying at homestay with the local family in their traditional house.
Lung Tam cultural village
Located in Quan Ba, Lung Tam village is surrounded by rocky mountains. And here is inhabited by Mong ethnic people. They are famous with the brocade craft tradition, indigo dyeing and beeswax painting.
Come to here, visitors can learn how to weave a piece of cloth, that the Mong ethnic people invented to weave clothes and bags made of linen for a long time.
