To day I will join a special Meo Vac ethnic market in Ha Giang province – a frontier land of Vietnam- It’s only held on Sunday this is the largest market in Dong van karst plateau. Let’s go!
From early morning, the weekend market be came more exciting & crowded than ever. The Dao, Mong, Tay, Giay, Lo Lo ethnic groups came down, everyone carry vegetable, agricultural products, such as goat, chicken, pig…
Most of people in Dong Van, Meo Vac town, Ha Giang province live in the high mountain. Each villages are located a few walking days apart, so there is only one day at the weekend, they come down to the valley, go to the market. Some one drive on motorbike, some on ride on the house, but most of them walk on foot.
We also tried the local food in the market, we were interested in food. They have anything, from sticky rice, the local cake, the noodle& special like hotpot, it’s called “ Thang Co” .
After enough energy, we continue to discover the market. In here, you can be surprised because everything were sold here and market is so big & colorful because there are many kind of groups people here. The sound of different languages, the smile when we didn’t understand together. It was so fun!
At the other part of market, the husbands were busying at the animal market. They are trading & exchanging the chickens, big, cows, goats, dogs, so on.
The sound and smell are feature of this area. Before decision, they often lead the cow to a small field near market and try to plough on. Cow is the main & most value animal in their life, because it helps their farming work, it can take the cold better than buffalo. Try plough to know how the cow good or not.
It’s not only the the place to trade & exchange, weekend market in Ha Giang is also community center. They go to market to meet the friends, relatives, to telling about their life, health, to drink the warm corn wine.
The wine cans are displayed line, the buyer can try abit free.
The atmosphere as well as the ethnic people in mountain land is so warm and friendly . The smell of corn wine can make anyone feel drunk. The wine store will open until the end of market.
